Selah!

Selah! A rather unusual title for Rest a While’s Blog for this month, but there is a good reason for this as a little further reading will reveal.

First of all what does that word mean? After all, this word appears a number of times (74 in all), in the Bible; predominately in the Book of Psalms.

Although nobody knows the exact meaning of the word, it can be a musical term where instruction is given to slow down and pause before moving on to another expression in the arrangement. Perhaps even to allow a musical interlude in a song before singing continues.

But it also carries a spiritual weight inviting us to pause. An instruction to stop and reflect on the heavy or joyful truth that has just been read before reading on.

As you read ahead you will see a number of verses from the Psalms and their parallels or compliment verses from the New Testament. Only a few comments have been added because there is nothing like the word of God to speak for itself.

May you be blessed and encouraged and perhaps begin to exercise the privilege of pausing during moments in life to reflect on the goodness of God before you continue on your pathway.

🔸 When Sin Is Heavy

“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no guile.
When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.
For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me:
my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.
I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid.
I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD;
and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found:
surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.
Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble;
thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.”
Psalm 32: 1-7

Before Christ comes into the life of the one who has humbled themselves before God for the forgiveness of sin for salvation and cleansing, life is all out of sync as well as the body. The weight of the conscience is unrelenting. Living is an existence until there is a purpose that only the living God can accomplish in the life of the believer. When confession of sin and true repentance happens, then the life of Christ enters in and makes all the difference.
The life of the believer has access to the Father in all circumstances because that which formally separated us from God has been removed forever.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5: 17

🔸 The Wisdom of Trusting the Living God

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.
Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie:
to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.”
Psalm 62: 5-8

Once we are saved, we now belong to Christ who purchased is with His precious blood. We are no longer our own and our lives are best lived for Him in His strength.
He is not only the Saviour of our souls, but life is at its best when He is owned as Lord of our lives.
He is everything to the one who is trusting in Him.

Those who are outside of Christ are still in the darkness without hope. There is no weight, no value and no purpose in life without Christ. We were like them before we were save by the grace of God.

“Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate,
nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners,
shall inherit the kingdom of God.
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified,
but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”
1 Corinthians 6: 9-11

“In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
And ye are complete in him …”
Colossians 2: 9-10

🔸 The Fellowship of God and His People

“Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.
Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul:
they have not set God before them. Selah.
Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.”
Psalm 54: 1-4

How important it is to have a nucleus of God’s people with whom to assemble and fellowship. It is almost impossible to walk the Christian life alone, because we are too vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy of our souls.
Like the sheep of the Lord’s fold we must follow the Great Shepherd and stay in His fold where we can be protected and provided for.

“Let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is;
but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
Hebrews 10: 24-25

🔸 In Time of Trouble

“LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.
Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.
But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.
I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.”

Psalm 3: 1-6

Going through trials and troubles goes with the territory of seeking to live a Christ honouring life, but we do not ever go through those trials alone, and because of this we can rest in peace. His "perfect peace."

“For [Jesus] hath said, ‘I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.’
So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper,
and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
Hebrews 13: 5-6

🔸 Feeling Alone and God is Distant

“I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart:
and my spirit made diligent search.
Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.
I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.”
Psalm 79: 6-12

It is good to remember those times in the past when we saw God at work. Because there are times when we may question the goodness or may be even the presence of God Himself! Depending on how we are feeling His promises may feel irreverent, and we may feel as if we have caused Him great displeasure.
This is the time to remember when we rejoiced in what we knew God was doing in our lives. Those times when we prospered spiritually and we lived in an environment of blessing.
Remember that the God who was so good to us in the past hasn’t changed. He is still good and faithful today. He is at work and one day we will understand why those dark times were necessary.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution,
or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long;
we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers,
nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8: 35-39

🔸 Keeping Priorities

“LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days,
what it is; that I may know how frail I am.
Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee:
verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain:
he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.”
Psalm 39: 4-7

Seeing as we now are serving the most worthy of all masters, let us do so with every ounce of our being for His honour and glory. Let us make the most of every moment while we have them.
What could be more fulfilling in our walk with God than to bring delight to His heart?

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”

Ephesians 5: 15-17

“Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance:
for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
Colossians 3: 23-24

🔸 Eternal Hope

“God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.”
Psalm 49: 15-17

Of course our lives in Christ would not be complete without our blessed hope! That is the promised appearing of our beloved Lord Jesus to take us to His Father’s house that He has been preparing for a long time now.
Whether we go to be with the Lord Jesus through the article of death, or in the catching up of His people from the earth to meet Him in the air, we will have all been redeemed from the grave.
The best is yet to come … very soon. Perhaps Today!

“I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep,
that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain
unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds,
to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”
1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18

Added to all of those exhortations to pause and reflect, is the encouragement from Paul the Apostle to train our thinking in order to be more than a conqueror and live in the good of the sweet fellowship of the God of peace Himself:

“Finally, brethren,
whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest,
whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report;

if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise,
think on these things … and the God of peace shall be with you.”
Philippians 4: 8-9

Happy Pausing
