An Anchored Mind

Life can be cast into a turmoil in a moment of time - just like that!

We can be doing our regular things when BOOM! … we are hit broadside and almost knocked off our feet as it were. We are left gasping for air, our heart is racing, and our thoughts go into overdrive sending us into panic mode!

If we knew something like this was coming we would have at least done our level best to prepare ourselves! But more often than not we don’t, and so we are left stumbling around for a while until we find our bearings. But sadly others are completely swept off track and overwhelmed.

This isn’t an occurrence that has happened in our day and time only, but is something that has accompanied the human race down through the ages past.

We have all probably made the mistake of turning to the wrong source for encouragement, comfort, or the help we need, which resulted in our discouragement or disappointment.

This is where a close walk with God is all important

To have a safe and secure hope; the kind of hope that enables us to go through trials with steadfastness, we must know well the foundations upon which our soul is anchored.

Mary of Bethany knew this well. The Bible records that 'she sat at the feet of Jesus and heard His word.' (See Luke 10: 38-39). I believe that she did this as often as she had opportunity. Through hearing His word, and learning of Him, her knowledge and appreciation of her beloved Lord and Saviour was deepened; therefore anchoring and strengthening her faith when a colossal trial came upon her suddenly.

It was the sudden passing of her brother while the Lord Jesus was away from them that plunged the family into unimaginable sorrow. But there was something about the way Mary quietly trusted in her beloved Lord in the midst of her sorrow that touched the hearts of her comforters, causing them to soon trust in the Lord Jesus for themselves, after her dear brother was restored to them alive by the Lord Himself.

“Then many of the Jews which came to Mary,
and had seen the things which Jesus did,
believed on him.”
John 11: 45

How can we have such a demeanour as Mary? How can our hope be anchored as hers? How can we make it through the trial of our lives without letting our Lord down?

There is no one more qualified than the Lord Himself to answer these questions. He said:

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and
learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart:
and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11: 28-30

Our ability to stand in quietness and confidence will be in proportion to our confidence and knowledge of the One in Whom we trust.

The more deeply we know Him, the more confident will our trust be in Him.

And in grace and indescribable love He gives to us the perfect and most perfect promise at such a time as this:

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee:
because he trusteth in thee.”
Isaiah 26: 3

There we have it! When our minds are fixed, anchored, stayed upon our great God and heavenly Father, we are kept safe and secure in His ‘perfect peace’. The original text reads ‘Shalom, shalom’ ‘peace, peace’. Translated ‘perfect peace’. How precious is that!

👉 Here's a little video I found explaining the beautiful meaning of this verse using the Hebrew Text: "Shalom, Shalom, Isaiah 26: 3"

And so when everything caves in on us and we are laying awake in the night unable to quieten our mind, please take heart and treasure those great words of comfort, remembering it is God who has promised, and He cannot lie. “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” 2 Corinthians 1: 20
