This is the time of the year when at the checkout at the grocery store I am usually asked: "Would you like a lottery ticket?" To which I usually answer: "No thank you."

It would be the easiest thing to say: ‘yes please’, and purchase my ticket, and then purchase another the next time I go, and another… just to add to my chances of winning the first prize!

Some years ago, somebody bought me a lottery ticket, and I didn't think too much about it until the time came closer for the drawer to be made. By then the prize increased such a large amount that the winner would have acquired a life changing sum of money.

I looked at my ticket that I had kept in a safe place and wondered if this was the winning ticket, what would I do with it? If I actually won first prize, would it really do me any good like everyone dreams about?

Naturally speaking, there were a few things I would have liked, but none of them were essentials at that time. I could live without any of those things like I have been doing quite happily up till now.

So when I didn’t win a prize let alone the top one I wasn’t all that bothered about it, and I didn’t have to spend long fantasising about suddenly becoming very wealthy… and having to explain the reason why :)

But what is a lottery anyway? Doesn’t it all boil down to ‘my gain is someone else’s loss?’ And that is not a good idea when we see all the casualties such a large and sudden windfall can bring.

When we look at it like that, I can’t help but wonder why people do that to themselves? There is that long period of time when every ticket holder is ‘crossing their fingers’ as it were, hoping they will be the one who wins the ‘big one’, and year after year the majority of those folks are disappointed that favour didn’t shine on them yet again! And the person who gets the prize has to learn how to use it well before it ruins them! Not many come through unscathed!

Such a waste of time, energy, and money with very little benefit for all concerned! However, there is something so much better than a slim chance of a windfall top prize to be acquired. This is a treasure that will greatly bless the lives of those who come into possession of it rather than bring about ruination!

 AND it's free!

Well, it is free for those who will gladly receive it, but it cost God everything to bring it to us! The gift is His beloved Son and all that comes with Him. The Lord Jesus spoke of Himself when He said one day: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3: 16.

When God gave a gift like this it wasn’t just for the sake of giving, but it was because of love for undeserving sinners like ourselves, and God reached out to us in mercy to save us from our path of destruction and ultimate eternal separation from Him.

He saw that the need we have in our hearts is something that money cannot buy, even though most people are craving for a life changing sum they believe will fix their problems. The need of the human race goes much deeper than the need for tangible things.

Every human soul has a God shaped vacuum that only He can fill.

Understanding what our real need is, and what God has provided as the remedy is something far too wonderful to pass off. But sadly many do and continue with the false hope that something big might come their way to change everything. But this uncertain type of hope is all that empty world can give. The hope that comes from God however is as sure as solid rock; it needs to be to withstand all of the opposition is gets!

Sin is the reason for the discontent in the soul of every human being. It isn’t just what we do but who we are, and this is the reason why God gave His only begotten Son. Try as we may to fill that empty space in our lives, we will never succeed until we humble ourselves as guilty sinners before God trusting totally in His precious Son who went all the way to the cross to die as our Substitute.

There, on the cross He took away all of the guilt, the shame, and the consequences of our sin. The sin debt we owed to God was paid for in full!

The heart of everyone who is trusting fully in the Lord Jesus has the potential to have a deep rooted unswerving faith that fixes the soul on our journey through life with all its ups and downs. By faith we are linked to a real Man alive in heaven today, and He has promised to be with us always right up to the very moment when He will come to take his trusting people home to be with Him one day very soon.

The Bible tells us that every one who is trusting in Him belongs to Him and He to us! "He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” 1 John 5: 12.

In other words - He who has the Son has EVERYTHING!

The following is a story that I believe may help everyone to understand just how precious the Son is and all that there is to be found in him:

“A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art.

Sadly, his son died in battle in the Viet Nam war while rescuing another soldier, and the father grieved deeply for his only son. About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door.  A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, "Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art.

The young man held out his package. "I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.”

The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture.

"Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me.  It's a gift.”

With great pride the father hung the portrait over his mantle. It brought great comfort to him in the months before he died.

After some time had passed there was to be a great auction of his paintings and property. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection. On the platform sat the painting of the son.

The auctioneer pounded his gavel. "We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture?”

There was silence. Everyone had come to see if they could get their hands on the famous paintings in the collection. They hadn’t come to see the painting of the son, they had come for the ‘real bids’ But the auctioneer insisted that the painting of the Son must be sold.

"The son!  The son!  Who'll take the son?” He asked the crowd.

After another silence, a voice came from the very back of the room.  It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. "I'll give £10 for the painting." Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.

The auctioneer asked if there were any higher bids but no one was interested in ‘the son’ and so he pounded the gavel.  "Going once, twice, SOLD for £10!" A man sitting on the second row shouted. "Now let's get on with the  collection!”

But the auctioneer laid down his gavel. "I'm sorry, the auction is over. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. The man who took the son gets everything!"  (Based on the writing of Woodrow Kroll)

A win on the lottery is nothing to be compared to all that the Father has to give through his Son, and everyone is a winner who trusts in Him!
