Ghoulies and Ghosties

Well, it's that time of the year again when the pumpkin lanterns are placed at the front doors showing off menacing expressions, artificial cobwebs and spiders hang in windows and a whole host of folks both young and old dress themselves in tatty costumes and scary makeup, all in the name of having a bit of fun!

This is the time of the year in which the creepy and scary are acceptable, when the sinister is intriguing, when evil is celebrated, and the dark is embraced! When all the while those who are really on the dark side are rejoicing at the activities of the general population at such a time as this. Little do they know what this is really all about! How can people be so gullible?

Well, I believe I can answer my own question ... It is because the enemy is busy, and seeing as he is the master of deception, the vast majority are swept away with this evil garbage.

The Lord Jesus told us that the enemy, 'aka' Satan is not only a liar but the father of lies, which means that he has offspring! Unlike God, he cannot be everywhere at the same time, so he has a myriad of followers whom he places exactly where he wants them to be. They are either demonic entities who have taken up residence in people or generally deceived and gullible people like most of the folks we know.

'Just a bit of harmless fun,' they say.  Really???  Well, I suppose that is understandable to have that type of mindset when we live in a world that has an upside down, back to front, and inside out mindset. But look a little closer and you will see that this wicked virus has infiltrated even our common language so that 'wicked' now means good, great, or fantastic! The word 'sick' believe it or not now means awesome, wonderful, or cool! The word 'beast' now refers to someone who is good or awesome! And sadly the beautiful word 'gay', which used to mean light hearted and carefree has been hijacked!

So, let's take a look at what the Bible has to say about all this topsy turvy  way of thinking.

"Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:
That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it:
and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light,
and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!"
Isaiah 5: 18-21.

Oh, how people love to mock the living and Almighty Sovereign God!  They assume that because He does not move at their mockery He'll do nothing ...

"Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily,
therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil."
Ecclesiastes 8: 11.

But He IS Sovereign and there is a good reason why He doesn't come in and swiftly give to wicked people their just deserts. Every day is another day that a merciful God gives space for them to repent from their sin and trust Him with all their heart.

The practices of witchcraft and demonism are strongly condemned in the Bible. Manasseh, son of king Hezekiah was a wicked man in the extreme and this is his résumé -

"Manasseh did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD ...
For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down,
and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves,
and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.

Also he built altars in the house of the LORD, whereof the LORD had said,
In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever.

And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.
And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom:
also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft,
and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards:
he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger."
2 Chronicles 33: 2-6.

You name it, Manasseh did it!  He dared to defy all the best principles of God Himself and he held nothing back. However, as wicked as he was, there came a time in his life when even this man was brought to his knees before God and repented of all his wicked deeds. Just in case we might think that folks who engage in such practices are outside the realms of God's grace and readiness to pardon, Manasseh did, so there's hope for all.

But these are just a few mentions of the practices that were once deemed as abominable practices, which are now embraced by people and tinkered with by the vast majority of folks out there in the name of a bit of fun!

Be warned, as I used to teach the children in Sunday School years ago:

Little tigers grow into big tigers. And big tigers bite!

What looks innocent and perhaps rather appealing can grow and turn into something very dangerous in the passing of time!

Instead of playing with the dark, sinister, and unknown, why not come to the One who offers in the place of fear - 'exceeding gladness.' In the place of sorrow - 'unspeakable joy.' Instead of troubles and torments - 'the peace of God, which passes all understanding.' And instead of bondage -  'freedom indeed', which only the Son can give.

Well, the alternatives that the Lord has to offer in love and Sovereign grace as opposed to the lies and trickery cannot be compared. All this and so much more is offered freely with the forgiveness of sin, costing folks like us absolutely nothing. However, don't ever think that it is a cheap offer; for it cost the life of the precious Son of God on the cross to secure such a deal.

The Bible tells us that "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5: 8.

Held up for all to see was the supreme love of God offering His only begotten Son as the Substitute for sinners like you and me. What an absolute treasure He is!

So, while tribes of people roam the streets 'trick or treating' feigning to be the 'un-dead', ghoulies and ghosties, let us remember that every one who has truly trusted in the Lord Jesus is acquainted with One who truly rose from the dead and lives today in the power of an endless life.

Just to conclude, I couldn't help but smile at the thought that as usual a few days after Halloween there is a rise in the coughs and sneezes, and I can't help but wonder that instead of carving the pumpkin and using it a scary lamp, perhaps it would be much wiser cooking it making a lovely tasty soup or pie, and slow roasting those seeds to munch on. All of those wonderful nutrients will do wonders for the immune system!

Halloween is a waste of pumpkins I say! :)
